Twelve is a milestone birthday for a dog. If you have been searching “12 in dog years” or “is 12 old for a dog”, you are not alone, and the honest answer is: yes, for most dogs 12 is old, but how old depends a lot on size.

This page gives you the numbers from the two methods you will see most often, shows the math so you can check it, and turns the answer into a few practical steps. It is an organization guide, not veterinary advice. Your veterinarian is the best person to tell you where your own dog is in life.

The short answer

  • Using the rule of thumb the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) gives for a medium sized dog: about 74 in human years
  • Using the formula from a 2019 UC San Diego study of Labrador Retrievers: about 71
  • Using the old “multiply by 7” rule: 84, which the AVMA says is not accurate

Whichever number you use, a 12 year old dog is in the later part of life.

Method 1: the AVMA rule of thumb

The American Kennel Club (AKC) explains the AVMA’s guideline for a medium sized dog this way:

  • The first year equals about 15 human years
  • The second year adds about 9, for about 24
  • Each year after that adds about 5

For a 12 year old medium sized dog: 24 for the first two years, then 10 more years at 5 each, which adds 50. That gives about 74.

Method 2: the UC San Diego study

In 2019, UC San Diego researchers compared age related chemical changes in DNA (sometimes called an “epigenetic clock”) in 104 Labrador Retrievers with the same changes in people. As AKC reports, they proposed this formula:

Human age = 16 times the natural logarithm of the dog’s age, plus 31

For a 12 year old dog that works out to about 71. AKC points out the limit: the study looked at one breed only, so the result may not fit your dog, especially a very small or very large one.

Is 12 old for a dog? It depends on size

Size changes the picture more than anything else. AKC notes that small dogs generally live longer than large breeds, and that large dogs age faster. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) describes a senior pet as one in roughly the last 25% of its expected life span, and says smaller dogs may not be considered seniors until around 12, while large breeds can be seniors from 7 to 8.

In practice:

  • A 12 year old small dog has usually just reached, or recently reached, the senior stage
  • A 12 year old medium dog has usually been a senior for a few years
  • A 12 year old large or giant dog is well into the senior years

What 12 changes in day to day care

The exact human age matters less than what you do with it. The AVMA says senior pets need to see a veterinarian twice a year or more. Both AVMA and AAHA list changes owners should notice and mention, such as stiffness, trouble with stairs, changes in sleep, weight, sight, hearing or behavior. Here is how to get organized around that.

1. Keep the vet visits on the calendar

2. Keep a short change log

A few lines a week are enough: walks, stairs, appetite, water, sleep and anything new. When you sit down with the vet, you will have dates instead of guesses. Our dog symptom tracker has a ready made layout.

3. Keep one medication list

Many dogs take more at 12 than they did at 6. Copy every medication and supplement onto one list, exactly as written on the label, and keep it where everyone in the house can see it. Our printable dog medication chart does the job. If a dose is ever missed, see what to do about a missed dose, and call your clinic before changing anything.

4. Make home and handoffs easier

AAHA and AVMA both suggest simple home changes for older pets: non slip rugs, a bed that does not require stairs, and ramps or steps where jumping is hard. Update your pet sitter instructions so anyone caring for your dog knows the routine your dog has now.

What about 10, 14 or 16?

With the same AVMA rule of thumb for a medium dog, each extra year adds about 5 human years: about 64 at 10, about 84 at 14 and about 94 at 16. See how old a 10 year old dog is in human years for the younger end.

Keep it all in one place

The printable Senior Dog Care Binder ($15) keeps vet visit notes, medication pages, logs and caregiver handoff pages together, which makes the senior years far easier to keep track of. If you want one page to start with today, get the free emergency and medication card and keep it on the fridge.
